Sitemap of "Elvis Presley: A Life in Books"
|
|
The website "Elvis Presley: A Life in Books" provides you with information
about Elvis- and Elvis-related books, and aims to help you find your way in the ever-growing Elvis-literature.
Information which is often scattered all over the internet.
What about the layout of this website?
The layout of the website is more or less structured like a 'real' book, with a front page, an introduction,
a table of contents, the main part with the books and some closing pages. All accessable thru the menu
on the left side. Since you are familiar with reading books,
navigating around should not be a major problem.
What's on this page?
On this page a description is given of what to find on each of the pages on this website.
Look at it as the 'Chapters' (Pages) and 'Paragraphs' (Subpages) of a book.
You can either jump directly to a (sub-)page from here or read some background info about the pages.

intro |
|
Short intro with description of the links in the left menu.
The left menu accompanies you on each page and provides you with easy navigation on the website.
All "orange" coloured text on all of the pages are links to other pages, either on this website or external.
The external links are indicated with the symbol and are opened in a new tab of your browser.
All information about a book is gathered on a so-called book info card.
The book info cards are opened as a pop-up, so you don't need to leave the page. Javascript needs to be enabled for viewing the book info cards.
The main entry page ("frontcover") can be accessed from each page by clicking on the image at the top left side of the menu.
The image shows Elvis reading a magazine on his green couch in Hotel Grunewald, Bad Nauheim, Germany, 1958
(photo taken by Christel Flor, copyright Optik Boelke, Bad Nauheim).
Photo is courtesy of Jerry Osborne from his book Elvis Like Any Other Soldier
On the bottom right side of each page is also a (text) link which guides you back to the main entry page.
While scrolling down on each of the pages a red button appears on the left which lets you
jump back to the top of the page.
As you may notice there are many navigational links on a page to guide you around.
Just try and explore: you can't break anything!
(disclaimer: ElvisBooks takes no responsibility if you break your finger while clicking around.)

News and announcements of new book releases since 2002.
No major update of these pages has been done since 2011,
but they are kept here for historic reasons. Only the layout will be adapted once in a while to match the whole website.
In case there is a descrepancy between the information on the news pages and the linked book info card, the last one is leading and always up to date.
Note that new book releases can now be found on the "inprint" pages.
To the right side of each page you can find menus which float in and out to jump to a specific year with news.

Announcements of updates on the website since 2002.
Since information is regularly updated and usually involves adding books or making small corrections to the book info or covers,
only major changes and additions are mentioned here.
In case there is a descrepancy between the information on the page and the linked book info card, the last one is leading and always up to date.
Keep an eye on the "Page updated" at the bottom each page to see when the page was last updated.
To the right side of each page you can find menus which float in and out to jump to a specific year with updates.

bookshelf |
|
The bookshelf is the main part of the website with several lists of books.
These lists all contain the full collection of books but sorted in a different way.
The books can be sorted by
title, author, year of publication, category, publisher, ISBN and language.
Also a section with Elvis- and music-related books is given.
Each page contains all the books in one html file, no frames, php or other fancy stuff involved.
You may save the page(s) to your device or print them for personal use.
The bookshelf-pages are generated from a local database and then uploaded to the server. The aim is to upload
the updated collection every week. So your saved/printed pages may be outdated at some point.
Watch the "Page updated" at the bottom of each page.
On each page, you can use the search function of your browser to (hopefully) find what you are looking for.
Links on top of each page provide the navigation on the page, e.g. first letter of book title or author.
In addition, to the right side of each page you can find one or two menus which float in and out while clicked on
or hoovered over. They allow you to jump to a specific point on the page.
These menus are kept on screen and are always accessable.
While scrolling down on each of the pages a red button appears on the left which lets you
jump back to the top of the page. Or to go back to the top of the page use the [top]-link which is located on the right side of the pages after the end of a section.
To access detailed information about a book, just click on the book title. A screen will pop up (enable javascript!)
showing a so-called "book info card" with all the details of the book (if available): the front and back cover images,
the title, author, year of publication, publisher, country of publication, if it is a hardback or paperback,
the number of pages, and the ISBN10 and ISBN13 of the book.
For most of the books, the category and a short description are given too.
The source of the information is given too. If the source is given as "ElvisBooks" it means the information was
taken from the physical book. If "various sources" is given the origin is unclear: most info comes from
the internet but since a substantial amount was gathered over the last 20 years, and not always recorded, the exact source is not always known.
Links to external (WWW) pages on the "book info card" are rarely given for a simple reason: links may disappear from the internet and this may go unnoticed
in the database for quite some time. Experiencing broken links is quite frustrating.
However, I once in a while check the "inprint"-pages for broken links as these are still recent
and have a higher change of still being alive.
There should be enough information on the book info card to
search the internet yourself: on title, author, ISBN or publisher.
Years ago there was also the possibility for a reader to rate a book. This was abandonned at some point due to
loads of spam. Maybe this feature will be activated again in the future.
Comments and ratings given back then are kept on the cards.
A reference to the website "A Life in Books" is included in case the "book info card" appears in your browser as a separate page
without any referring links. Then at least you know where it is coming from ...
Each "book info card" also has a date stamp which shows the date of the last update.
Disclaimer: Although "A Life in Books" makes every effort to guide you around in the Elvis literature,
the presented list of books is by no means "exhaustive" and the book data is by no means 100% "correct" or "complete".
"A Life in Books" is partly depending on information from various internet sources which might not be complete or correct, and
in the process typos are inevitably. The database is worked-over regularly for additions, missing info and corrections, so
most of it will be taken care of in time.

title |
The books sorted by title, then author and year.
On top of the page are links A to Z which jump to the first letter of the book title.
To the right are two floating menus: one to go to a page with a different bookshelf (author, year, etcetera), and one to jump to the first letter of the book title.

The books sorted by author, then title and year.
On top of the page are links A to Z which jump to the first letter of the author.
To the right are two floating menus: one to go to a page with a different bookshelf (booktitle, year, etcetera), and one to jump to the first letter of the author.

The books sorted by year, then title and author.
On top of the page are links to jump to the year.
To the right are two floating menus: one to go to a page with a different bookshelf (booktitle, author, etcetera), and one to jump to the year.
|
|
bookshelf |
category |
The books sorted by category, then title, author and year.
Many books can be put in multiple categories, but only one selection is made.
On top of the page are links to jump to the category.
To the right is one floating menu: to go to a page with a different bookshelf (booktitle, author, etcetera).
There are too many categories to include in a separate side menu, so just jump up to the top of the page to select another category.
|
|
bookshelf |
publisher |
The books sorted by publisher, then title, author and year.
On top of the page are links to jump to the first letter of the publisher.
To the right are two floating menus: one to go to a page with a different topic (booktitle, author, etcetera), and one to jump to the publisher.
|
|
bookshelf |
isbn |
The books sorted by isbn.
The title, author and year are also given.
The ISBN is usually related to the country of publication although this is not always the case.
Have a look at Korea (89-) for instance ...
A list of countries is given
on top of the page, so you can directly jump to a list of books published in a certain country.
To the right are two floating menus: one to go to a page with a different bookshelf (author, year, etcetera),
and one to jump to the ISBN.
Note that many (especially older) books have no ISBN, or the ISBN is unknown (to me).
In these cases the book was given an unique ID number in the order it was put in the database.
That's the reason why books with "no ISBN" or "unknown ISBN" appear more or less randomly in the list.
Books with reprints and/or different editions may sometimes have the same ISBN.
Since the ISBN is used as a unique identifier, these reprints and editions have been given an ID,
and the actual ISBN is given on the "book info card".
Note also that there are many English speaking countries for which the ISBN starts with a "0-" or "1-".
No subdivision has been made for these numbers/countries, but you can have a look at the "book info card"
to see in which country it was actually published (if known).
|
|
bookshelf |
language |
The books sorted by language.
The title, author and year are also given.
A list of languages is given
on top of the page, so you can directly jump to a list of books published in a certain language.
To the right are two floating menus: one to go to a page with a different bookshelf (booktitle, author, etcetera),
and one to jump to the language.

Other Elvis- and music-related books about contemporaries and musical influences.
This is not an exhaustive list, just a list of what's in my collection.
Many of these books have a chapter of section on Elvis, or at least try to place Elvis in musical and historical perspective.

A list of books that appeared in each year, sorted by month, since 2004.
For the present year, this also includes books which are scheduled for future release.
Depending on the part of the world you are living in the month of release may differ.
Where possible a link to the publisher and/or an external review is given.
External links pointing to the World Wide Web are indicated with the symbol .
Since external links to the World Wide Web may come and go they are checked once in a while if they still exist. If not, they are removed.
In case there is a descrepancy between the information on the page and the linked "book info card", the last one is leading and always up to date.
To the right side of each page you can find two menus which float in and out to jump to a specific month on the page or to a specific year.
Additional books surfacing after a year ended are not always added to the older "inprint"-pages. Instead, for a complete list of books that appeared in a
specific year the bookshelf sorted by year is always up to date.

|
authors |
|
These pages list books by selected authors and give you an overview
of the author's output and effort over the years. This is a pure personal and limited selection: there are authors which produce(d)
more and more essential books. Please consult the bookshelf sorted by author if you are looking
for a list of books by a specific author.
Books for each author are sorted by year, and you can either click the
front cover or the link in the reference list to open the "book info card". Hovering with your mouse over the front cover
will show you the title and year of publication.
Note that the reference list for each author may contain more books than the number of covers shown on the page:
not all books on the reference list have an entry or cover in the database at the moment.
